Every time I write of immigration, of Alabama and its most-merciless law of the land, I’m besieged by outraged writers.
They say the same thing:
What is it about ‘illegal’ you don’t understand?
I know that very question misses the point.
Because this law, this rigid, unreasonable non-solution to the immigration issue, won’t make any illegal alien more illegal.
It merely makes potential criminals of you, and me, of teachers and preachers, construction companies or those — shudder — with a weakness for human decency. It makes Alabama intentionally inhospitable.
And that is not the Alabama I know. (more…)
