Congratulations to the 2011 recipients of the S.C. Hispanic Leadership Council‘s scholarship awards. They were recognized Friday at a luncheon in Columbia hosted by First Choice Community Center. Good luck to you all!
Dr. Myriam Torres, director of the USC Consortium of Latino Immigration Studies, served as keynote speaker. Her speech addressed the challenges facing Latin-Americans living in the U.S. today and exhorted the recipients to make their communities proud, to give back and to live principled and disciplined, as well as impassioned lives.
Also on hand was Jessica Viruet, along with her proud mother and father Juana and Juan Viruet. Jessica recieved the Leadership Council’s scholarship award five years ago. On Friday, she returned as a recentĀ magna cum laude graduate of USC-Aiken with her degree in Early Childhood Education. Soon Jessica will begin her new career at Batesburg-Leesville Primary School. Which is awesome. Nice job, Jessica!
